I’ll exchange you €3 for 1.6 billion

I

Yep, that’s right. Well, more or less…

Sometimes it will be 30 million, sometimes 200, and if you’re lucky enough it can be up to 1.6 billion. Not bad, right?

I have clients from all over the world, and everyone is offered the same opportunities. I am a fair person. If you have €3, you have the same possibilities wherever you are, whoever you are, and whatever you do.

Hey JL, you still haven’t told us what to do, and above all, how the hell can we take that money home?

Show me the money JL

You’re right, but give me a little time to give some clarity into this, it’s my moment, my 5 minutes of glory.

I’m a bit of a gambler.

But I don’t play casino games, I don’t bet on sports, and I don’t play poker (well, sometimes I do play poker yes, why lie?). But I do bet on myself, and when I don’t like something, I try to change it.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

After finishing my degree in Computer Engineering and working for three years in development with obsolete technology and programming languages, I realized that this was not for me. It was not because of the company, but I simply could not envision myself in 30 years doing the same thing, day after day.

That made my motivation plummet 📉. Regardless of my salary.

At that time, I used to dedicate part of my free time to playing poker (now you see how I am a bit of a gambler). Over time, my motivation as a programmer dropped to 0%, and my motivation in the game industry rocketed to 100%.

There was only one possible move; leave everything and start over. So, my partner and I quit our jobs, we left our apartment, we sold the car, we took our pug Pug JLMartin and we went abroad to “live off gambling”. ALL IN.

All IN JLMatin

It’s not you, it’s me.

I have spent the last 10 years working in the gambling industry (poker, betting, casino, lotteries), always in Marketing and Product positions. Due to my background as an Engineer, I have had more facility for numbers, which means that despite working in acquisition, SEO, etc., I have specialized in USER RETENTION.

I’ve been working in startups, medium-sized companies and some of the biggest gambling companies in the world with thousands of employees. I’ve started departments from scratch, expanded others, and the results have always improved. BUT, the same thing happened to me again. You know what they say:

Once a gambler, always a gambler!

But what the fuck is wrong with you, man?

That’s what everyone thinks, I see it in their eyes.

You are crazy JL

It is very simple. I could have an easy life, dedicating myself to what I have been doing for years, having good results, and earning a salary well above the average. But that’s not what I want, that’s not for me.

I need challenges, I need to learn, I need to be deeply interested in what I do. And above all, I need to do it for myself.
Working for others has many advantages, I can’t deny it. But it’s not what I’m looking for.

So again, ALL IN.

But hey, can you tell us what you do?

One of the startups I was working for was dedicated to selling lottery tickets online, where I saw that there was a lot of potential if the project was carried out well. But in order to be competitive in that industry, you need a large amount of resources.
Not only you need to develop a platform, but to add special payment methods due to the type of industry.  There are lots of regulations, the acquisition cost is huge, along with many other barriers.

Obviously, that was a path that I could not travel.

So I decided to go for a little shortcut, go for a white label, and then just focus on what I do best, marketing and retention.

So now you know, I sell lottery online. I’m your lucky lotter 😆

As the acquisition for this type of business required a strong investment at the beginning: you need to purchase traffic from unconventional resources and try as many of them you can. Furthermore, there is  big competition with millionaire budgets, this option was simply not affordable.

So I proposed a strategy focused on SEO in the medium term (Yes, a lottery platform acquiring with SEO) and having a very high retention from the beginning.

Getting the users who register with you, be they many or few, to stay with you is the best marketing campaign you can execute.

It hasn’t been easy, but it is being a great challenge. Some data for hope (Nov 2020):

  • More than 60k sessions per month.
  • More than 2M page views.
  • Acquisition cost ~ 0. We do not buy traffic.
  • Visits and purchases spread over several regions. If one GEO fails (for whatever reason), the blow will not be hard.
  • We have crossed € 260k in sales. With an investment based solely on the benefits we obtain.
  • The loyalty of users through the roof.

I lack time for all my plans.

There is still something else.

It is important to diversify, for that reason and because my head does not stop thinking at any moment, I am going to launch small projects in which I am working. Always following the same formula, which I think is useful both for me and for many other small entrepreneurs. Minimize investment and maximize results.

I think it is important to document all the steps that I’m taking and provide a little information on how I do it and share in public, not only from the projects I am working on but also from general experience in both marketing and retention, since the latter is the great forgotten of Marketing, and I’m sure a lot of people can benefit from it.

So follow me on Twitter, I don’t sell anything 🤣. I just want to share ideas, experience, and knowledge, and of course, keep learning.
